Tree Permit

In 1992 Ventura County adopted The Ventura County Tree Protection Ordinance, which governs the trimming or removal of “protected trees” in unincorporated areas (land outside of the cities). These include all oaks and sycamores of a minimum size, trees of any species with a historical designation, and large trees of any protected species (90” in circumference). Before any live protected tree can be trimmed or removed, a tree permit must be obtained from the Planning Division.

The stated purpose of the regulations, which were amended in 1995, is “to encourage the responsible management of these resources by employing public education and recognized conservation techniques to achieve optimal cover of healthy trees of diverse ages and species while practically reconciling conflicting demands for alternative uses.”

In addition to the adopted ordinance, Tree Protection Guidelines are provided to further explain and amplify the ordinance requirements for the benefit of individuals requesting a permit to alter or remove a protected tree. Included are approval standards for both Ministerial and Discretionary permits, how the value of a tree may be determined, and alternative methods of mitigation for removed trees.
