The public's growing understanding of Medi-Cal's new expanded eligibility rules is generating unprecedented numbers of Medi-Cal applicants.  The Human Services Agency appreciates the public's patience as we continue to process applications in the order received, using all technical tools and resources available to us.

The Human Services Agency is currently working through thousands of pending Medi-Cal applications that were received by Covered California and later forwarded to the county.  Our eligibility workers are processing applicants' paperwork as quickly as possible, with complete applications being processed more efficiently than those that still require additional documentation.  Applicants who have an urgent need to have their application processed due to a pending medical issue may call the Human Services Agency at 1-888-472-4463 or visit any of our Intake & Eligibility Centers or Community Service Centers.

Eligibility for Medi-Cal is typically retroactive to the date of application, which can minimize the impact of processing delays.  People may apply for Medi-Cal at any time of the year; the open enrollment deadline for Covered California does not apply to Medi-Cal.
