Cultural Heritage Board“Protecting Ventura County’s Historic, Cultural, and Natural Resources”The County of Ventura desires to preserve and protect public and private history and cultural and natural resources that are of special historical or aesthetic character or interest. The County’s Cultural Heritage Program, carried out by the Cultural Heritage Board, also seeks to relocate or recreate such resources where necessary for their preservation and for their use, education and view by the general public. A Cultural Heritage Ordinance was adopted in 1968 to carry out this purpose. The Non-Coastal Zoning Ordinance was amended in 2000 to add specific criteria and standards for Cultural Heritage sites. The Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board serves five cities: Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Fillmore, Thousand Oaks, and Simi Valley. Preservation IncentivesIf your property is a landmark, site of merit, or point of interest, you may be eligible for deviations from existing development requirements. Deviations were created in the County's Non-Coastal Zoning Ordinance to protect the integrity, architecture and character of Cultural Heritage sites. For example, as a landmark owner, you may be eligible to subdivide your parcel even if the parcel size is less than the minimum size for zoning. In addition, there are deviations from the minimum size for a “granny flat” if the structure is a Site of Merit or a Landmark. |
